How Do You Cope?

Hiya everyone

A few months ago I did a taster evening with a friend, one of the ladies who I did Reiki on must of liked it has she gave my number to a friend of hers and I got a client from it.

I was chuffed to bits as this is my first (paying) client I have worked on that I have never met or seen before. (Apart from the taster session).

Anyhow she turned up this evening for her appointment along with her mum and her boyfriend. I explained that my room was very small and that were welcome to call back in about an hours time, but they said they would sit and watch.[:-]

I was pretty mortified to be honest, having 4 people in my tiny little healing room was a nightmare, I had to stand to do the consultation and squeeze past these people to turn the CD on and to get her a drink afterwards. They looked soooooooo bored and I just couldn't wait till the treatment was over, it was the longest hour of my life. lol.

I didn't want them in my living room, as this week I have just redecorated and laid new flooring, plus that is my family's room and it is unfair to kick them out.

Can I just ask, what other practitoners do when their clients turn up with half their family..............how on earth do I politly tell them to go away, I can't accomadate them.

I don't know if there's anything specified in the law, but I see it as patient's/client's right to have someone with them as a chaperone during the treatment. I have had a few bring someone along to their first appointment (often it's men who are too nervous to face it without their girlfriend/wife!!) but never to second or subsequent treatments. They could if they wanted but I encourage them not too saying that I think they will relax better that way. I've never had more than one extra person show up though and as my room is tiny I think in that situation I'd say that there is room for one, but not two and put my foot down. Once someone asked if they could sit in my living room and I let them but was worried the whole treatment, so never again!

You'll get used to having someone "watching" in time! I always make sure they have a drink and something to read if they want it. 9 times out of 10 they will then book themselves an appointment at the end so it's all worth it!

I would have allowed one in the room and put on in the chair in a hallway if I was in that position., Sarah is right you do get used to people coming in and watching etc I even had someone video record once!!! Never Again.

Hi!
How about a small letter of explanation prior to the treatment explaning the situation & need for comfort, privacy etc? I know what you mean, and I got around this by sending such a letter in advance. Not had a problem since! Just a thought.

HIya everyone

Thanks for your replys. I think the problem was not with them watching me, it was knowing that they were just so bored, the room was so cramped and it was getting rather warm by the end of the session. From now on, when a client calls I will let them know that I only have a small room so to come alone or with ONE other person has I cannot accomadate them all.

At least it was a lesson learned.

You maybe don't want to give them the idea that they could bring someone along if they hadn't thought of it!
I ha donce a friend who booked a trearment, and I had invited him and his wife for dinner afterwrads. I though that the wife would be coming later, once the treatment was over. But both they came at the same time... I think I managed not to look too amazed when she said that she was curious how a SHiatsu treatment was done! Luckilly for me, you can explain a lot of what you do during a Shiatsu treatment, so it kept her busy too.
