Hi folks
I find that a significant number of my clients have persistent grittiness in the shoulder areas. A number of these would have underlying structural issues such as bad backs or hips and/or be quite stressed with associated neck stiffness/pain. It seems to me that there is a strong link from these presentations to shoulder issues. I suppose that this is not surprising when you consider the anatomical structure of the shoulder line in relation to the neck and spine.
Significantly though, most of these clients don't present with shoulder pain as a presenting condition which might suggest that the reflex areas are more sensitive than the actual shoulder area and that we may be able to close down the niggling awareness of shoulder discomfort or it is masked by the more immediate stiff neck or sore back.
It might also be worth considering the holistic aspect of "shouldering a burden". This links with stress and posture but I've found that it rings bells with a lot of those clients that I've mentioned it to.
If this is the underlying cause, and we shouldn't presume to assume so, then it will take some form of lifestyle change, possibly at a profound level, to allow the body to balance itself.
Which I must still be going through, cos I've always got lovely crunchy shoulder reflexes!
Best of luck with your observations and keep your intuition tuned!
