How Do You Market Yourself?

I thought I'd start a discussion on how we as RT's can market ourselves, because it's different than massage. There are some similarities in both but i have found the more direct massage way of attracting clients doesn't work with Reiki. (And I also want to include other forms of energywork in this as well.)

Your thoughts? What do you do and how is it working for you? Ideas?

I haven't started to market energy work as its own thing yet, but am planning to once I complete the certification I'm working on (for a modality called Absolute Balanced Mastery).

I have noticed something in talking with people...

standard conversation:
"What do you do?"
"I'm a massage therapist."
"Oh, cool." [Immediately placing me in whatever box they have in their heads for MTs. People have an idea of massage and think that all there is to it is what they know already.]

versus conversations I started having after the first ABM classes:
"So I've been taking this energy work class."
"Really? Energy work? What's that mean exactly."
"Well this energy work involves blah, blah blah, etc etc"
"Oh how interesting. I could probably use some of that!"

So I noticed that people are more open to "not knowing" about energy work, asking questions, receiving information.

Anyone else notice this? Are you using it to your advaneforum.xxxe?

In the past I have always been reluctant to raise the subject of energy in general. But over the years I have found that people are much more open to it than I had realized. As far as marketing is concerned, one of the requirements we had when I received my Reiki Master is that we have a business card stating that we are a Reiki Master. The line directly under my name has Reiki Master on it, and it has started a few conversations. I am currently building my own website and will have it posted on it also. I also recently ran an ad in the paper with Reiki at the top, along with massage, but think it is too early to say where it will go. It will be interesting in the weeks to come to see what will happen.

Yep, I've had the same experience many times. I practice massage, reiki and thai massage, and the latter two progress as informative conversations much more often. As far as marketing goes, on my business card I list myself as LMT and CTP (certified thai practitioner), and then list Massage, Thai Bodywork, Reiki below that. Through many incarnations, I have learned that it is best to keep the info on biz cards as simple as possible. I am now branching out into creating a web site to provide more detailed information. If I learn anything new, I'll be happy to share.

Using the power of leverage

Hi,

Most people that I talk to haven't been taught much about
how market themselves. A LOT of people just make up
some brochures and put them out there or place classified
ads. They quickly find out that it is very hit or miss and
easy to lose money.

I've designed a course that teaches people to 'think outside the
box' and one of the things that I teach is how to use the power
of leverage.

Leverage as I define it is "the ability to do more with less". The
first step is discovering who are your target customers (something
I teach in my course), then once you find them - think about other
people that are in daily contact with your target customers.

Then, you create a win-win situation and get others to promote
for you. rinse and repeat.
