The real question is, do you want to leave yourself open for a devastating lawsuit (even if the client can't collect) or would you rather protect yourself and your clients in the rare case of injury? If you choose to work as an employee, most employers require that you purchase and maintain your own insurance as long as you are employed.
Insurance will pay for any damages that might happen so you wouldn't be personally liable. Smart practitioners carry insurance the entire time they are massaging. It's less than $250 a year for full protection and peace of mind.
