How long should you take to introduce a houseplant into full sun outdoors?

My sister told me to put them in the shade and gradually let it get into the sun but exactly how long is that, a week, 2 weeks? I have a bunch of different kinds, a fig tree, ivy, some kinds of ferns etc. and I want to put them outside because of the air conditioning and we are trying to keep the windows and blinds closed. The spot in the shade they are in now is in the way and the place I want to put them gets about 7 or 8 hours of sun a day. If someone is familiar with doing this please give some advice, I have a lot and I don't want to kill them lol. Thanks.
 
Put the plants in the sun for one hour the first day, increasing the time for an hour each day after wards. Some ferns don't like a full day of sun even if they have been "hardened off".
