The NCBTMB standard from the start wasn't something I seen as being of any great value because I graduated from a 1000 hour course and NCBTMB only requires 500 to 700 hours, so I never joined.
Even with Continuing Education there really is no useful guide line for a 'standard of excellence' set-up with in the massage career field like there is in other career field, that can tangibly warrant a certain elevated level of experience that invokes different levels of pay.
Continuing Education is a great thing, but it doesn't always play a governing roll in the worth or excellence of one therapist over another : there is a very important 'spiritual' element that you can't put a value on. The worth of a massage therapist has always been judged by the quality & level of satisfaction we're able to provide in our treatments to our clients.
The mandatory requirements of 25 CE credit every two years, or you're unable to renew your license is the true insult. It's just a means for the industry of school to be assured that they will continuously keep making money. Those of us who have a Love for body working, will without any mandate put on us, continue naturally on our own to grow & learn within the different modalities of massage!!
Honestly it's sad to see, let a lone think, of the spiritual aspect of this career field in the U.S. being trampled over do to those(the owner/manager of schools & spa ) in the industry who aren't even therapist, but are in a position with-in the public to set up useless standard of excellence only to fulfill their love of money.
