How much to charge?

I am due to finish my aromatherapy at the end of June and would like to do a little work as a mobile practicioner (I already have a part time day job not related to therapy and family so am limited to how much I can do).

For security I am only intending to do clients by recommendation from friends/family but I am not sure how much to charge. I think the minimum to make it at all worth while (ie petrol, laundry, oils, time etc) would be £25 for a full body treatment and £15 for back, shoulders and neck.

Does this sound reasonable to you guys? Also any tips and advice would be welcome.

Hi Iz

I charge £25 for a full body massage but if use anything other than plain sweet almond (ie ready blended oils) i charge a few pounds extra - I would charge more for aroma, the oils are more expensive, and a consultation for aroma will take more of your time....

look into what salons and other mobile practitioners in your area charge.... you dont want to over charge so that your clients would possibly go elsewhere.... and you dont want to under cut them or charge too little for your time and expertise!

It depends on where you live, to say to what people can afford, it would be higher in cities than in small country villages, i to have the same problem as you, kids etc., and do not know what to charge, but ihave look also in sports leisure centres, and seen what they charge, what area do you live - just idea re pricing

A salon not too far away has just opened up charging £30 but it does not give a time scale for the massage. I tend to take around 1.25 hrs just for the massage not including any consultation or aftercare time.

give 'em a call and find out how long the massage they charge £30 for is.....

take into consideration that people travelling to a salon take up their own time and money for parking and travelling to the salon - where as thats passed onto you being mobile so dont be afraid to charge a little more!

Also anyone working in a salon will be paying 30-50% in room rental. My charges in the clinic where I work are more expensive than the treatments I do from hom.

Aromababe, do you travel to clients homes or work from your own? Do you think clients prefer to go to a salon or have someone travel to them?

Personally, I always (apart from one lady in a care home) have clients visit me. I decided this during my case studies when I spent endless hours lugging all my equipment up and down people's stairs.

I also don't have the travel time and if a client doesn't show, there is always something else I can be doing. I am lucky to have a room at home I can use.

As for clients' preferences, some, of course, love being treated in their own homes, especially in the evenings when they can just virtually roll over and go to bed. But there are many who much prefer to leave their noisy families and ringing telephones for an hour or so and spend some time in soothing surroundings.

Unfortunatly I do not have the space in my home to set aside for treatments and mine is one of the ringing phone, loud children type of homes as well.

I would be looking to do treatments in the evening/weekends as I work monday to friday during school hours and then have my kids to look after.

Overall do you think £25 for full body treatment is reasonable?

I think that if you are mobile and offering an aromatherapy treatment for an hour and a half, you can charge more than £25, although this will depend on where you are based. Around the London suburbs £30-£45 is about the going rate for an aromatherapy treatment.

However, if you are starting up, you might want to start with an introductory offer for the first couple of months whilst you begin to build up a client base.
