How much to put in a resume?

It has been ages since I updated my resume and I have a number of questions:

1. When applying for a massage therapy position, should a resume include previous, other non-massage related jobs?

2. If so, how far back? How much detail should be included?

3. Should it be on one page, and in what format?

4. Should the resume be specific to the job you are applying for?

Since I didn't have any experience whatsoever with re: massage, my first resume included my most recent job as a Patient Access Representative at a major hospital (heavy emphasis on the patient interaction).

As for a massage resume from someone with experience, I'd leave off the non-massage job history unless there's something in your career path (that is relatively new) that would/might relate to massage.

I'm going to be updating my resume and plan on including experience, types of clients, client load, types of work, volunteerism, etc.

1. i wouldn't unless you have no massage experience.
2. if they want more info, they can ask for it.
3. i would keep it as minimal as possible. one page is ideal. a good example would be... your objective, your experience, your education as well as your certifications (you could list those under a separate title or together-i like them separate) and lastly any special skills. keep it simplified and to the point.

Yes if you have no massage experience. Yes if they are relevant, as Gaspen cited, to this position.

No easy answer -- as much as you think will get them to grant you an interview

One page is preferred, but refer to the prior point. Make it a PDF, not in the program that created it.

I have a long background in another field (legal) and massage therapy is my second career (10 years).

I have a lot of MT experience working with athletes, speaking engagements, volunteer experiences, etc. I think I should include most of that, along with my specialized trainings.

I don't want to go so far back as to saboeforum.xxxe my opportunity for an interview because of age (yes, I know they can't discriminate ... but they do).

I would put the best of the best on your resume and make it as short and sweet as possible, one page is best, bold the important things and make sure it is on professional resume paper. Not white typing paper. Pretend you are an employer and type up your resume the way you would want to see it as an employer. I can send you my resume I recently typed up if you like and you can use it as an example.
