How stone cold must someone be to murder a cow that they've massaged daily?

People who raise cows for Kobe beef massage them daily to improve the meat's quality. Then they kill them. How on earth can a person interact so intimately with another sentient being every day and still bring themselves to murder (or send to someone else to murder) the innocent creature?

Lovechild: Yes, they can feel pleasure and pain. Even if they're sedated before they get slaughtered, they can feel the sedation (usually a shock or blow to the head), and they cease being able to enjoy things (i.e. eating).

The male cows would actually be killed at birth if no one wanted to eat them. Besides, the people doing it will have families of their own they need the money for.
