How to handle this Referral

Ok, I would like some advice on this situation.

I had a client call me the other day who was referred to me from another massage therapist in the office I work. This other therapist also happens to be the landlord. In this particular case, I offer a modality the client wanted. In addition, it seems that this particular client had been a somewhat regular to the other therapist. I am curious as to what I should do to thank the other therapist. Is a simple thank you enough, should I give her part of the sale, if so how much and for how long if she returns. Thanks for the help!

Obviously, thanks is always good (a card, a small token of appreciation). But...as far as money goes, that could open a can of worms not easily closed. Just my opinion, though.

The other question would be, why was she referred to you? Different modality? Was the landlord going on vacation? Are they injured?

I would just send a simple thank you... they referred the client to you, I wouldn't give them any fee at all, because they might expect it in the future.

I think saying "Thank you" is plenty. I refer to other MT's a lot. I'm ecstatic if they call to thank me! For some reason, this is rare. Most often, they accept the business I send them and never acknowledge my part. I would never want or expect money for a referral. A "thank you" though, is much appreciated.

I think a card would be nice. You could include a note in it that says when you come across a client who would benefit from her work, you will be sure to refer them to her.

I have referred clients to other therapists...Usually it is because of a request for two massages at the same time. I think there is a big demand for same time sessions.... and I wish I was able to have another practitioner working with me, but it is just not feasible. I found out recently the place I was referring these clients to has two therapists, but they share a space and dont work at the same time. And so the only place that truly can do same time sessions is the mammoth salon in town... When I refer to them, I get a responce that sounds like, "Oh.... we went there already and didnt like it."

What to do??? If they would like to wait 3 or 4 years, I would be glad to help them!! By that time I will be in a better position to help them with same time sessions.

i think a thank you is enough too but if you're looking to do something a little more than a note, purchase a gift card to panera or starbucks or a book store or something along those lines. a $5 or $10 gift card really isn't too much to spend and it's something special to let them know how much you appreciate it. i wouldn't give them money, i think it's weird and she may feel funny accepting it but everyone loves a gift card!

If you know how her office is decorated, a nice candle to match her decor would be very welcome, yet an inexpensive gesture of grattitude rather than an obligatory commission.

I do agree with the others, though, that a simple thank you would be ver appreciated and probably a nice surprise.
