How to introduce a cat to a dog?

So here's the situation.. my mom always comes into town to pet sit my grandmothers dogs while they are on vacation; they are both diabetic and require a lot of attention so they can't be left alone for too long. But the problem is that my mom also just got a cat..
Both the kitten and dog are very playful, and sometimes even a little aggressive. We'll have the house split in 1/2 cat, 1/2 dog.

Any tips on introducing the two animals?

keep the dog on a leach or in his crate and let the cate explore... dont force the interaction... its easy when they are young because they usually take to eachother as their siblings
