How to introduce new Parakeets?

About 2 years ago my daughter bought 2 parakeets, a male and a female, for her son but they ended up at my house because he never cared for them. I built them a lovely wooden cage (6' x 3' x 2') and placed branches and toys. They get along well and are very happy. I enjoy them so much now that I want to get more parakeets. The cage seems too large for only 2 parakeets. Plus there are many at the shelter and I want to offer them a good home.

How many is good to have in this large cage?
It is better to gets males, females, or an even mixture?
 
I assume your talking about budgerigars? Then they would love some new companions, being flocking birds in the wild. You could probably add another couple of pairs without harm. What genders are your birds? Find out, then add more birds making sure there are equal numbers of males and females. Budgerigars love to pair up, and a gender imbalance would mean competition for mates and trouble. When you've introduced the new birds, watch them closely for a few days to make sure they're happy and settling in OK.
