How to introduce two female cats?

I have recently adopted a cat yesterday from a humane society and she is the sweetest non-aggressive feline I have ever met. I do have an existing cat and I am worried about introducing the two. My existing cat is really "catty" and she does hiss at cats outside. After a few hours of the new cat staying in the room with me today my existing cat snuck into the room when my boyfriend opened the door and just had a hissing and spitting fit. I quickly tossed her out and shut the door and made sure my existing cat calmed down, but I am really worried about them not getting along. Is there any tips or suggestions so they can live peacefully together?
