How to place your towels on the client

Hi does anyone know any good videos etc where i can learn about drapping towles over the client threw treatment. I am doing a home study course and it does not cover this. Thanks

Wow - draping is quite important when it comes to massage so I'm surprised that it's not included on your course. Save money and have a look on YouTube there are bound to be clips on draping. Also look at some massage books in your library as these might show it too.

Yes i know there are problems with home study courses but it is the only way i could do it with having 3 children and a husband who works alot of hours including evenings and weekends so i just would not be able to go to college. I have been suprised at how much i have already learned from this site so i am looking into everything possible to get as much knowledge as possible to add to my course work. Thanks for your help

Put 'massage draping' into a search on YouTube - there are several methods shown in some detail. It doesn't take the place of the 'real thing' so if you are able to get to any practical workshops, it would be better.

Thank you for that. I have got to do some practical training in a salon or 2 day workshop. If it is a salon then hey have to pass me to say i can massage etc so i just need to know how to do it so i can practice at home. Thank you

I am doing holistic beauty therapy with stonebridge college. I know it does not cover the subjects very well but like i said before i am trying to get as much extra information as possible threw good books etc as i really do want to know what i am doing when i go into buisness.

Hi Susan,
I dont want to sound disrespectful, and I understand that not everyone can go to college to learn, but surely you cannot expect to start a business in massage after just doing a home study course, which you even admit "doesnt cover the subjects very well" and a weekend workshop?

Have you researched the industry? Are you aware that there are National Occupational Standards in Massage, and that distance learning courses are not accepted by any professional association in the UK, nor are they accepted by the regulatory body. Stonebridge wont tell you this, as they just want your money, however, I know that the governing body in massage is contacting all massage distance learning providers to tell them that they should not be offering these courses, as they are not practitioner level courses, and for the above reasons.

I really dont want to sound harsh, and this is not directed at you, but it took me years to learn the skills of massage, and I am still learning now, and that was after I took a long course, and was given a lot of extra tuition. Im sure most of the other massage therapists on this site will agree that you just cannot learn practitioner level massage by distance learning and a workshop. If I were you I would contact stonebridge and ask for your money back.

I think Susan has said she is already aware of the downside to some home study courses and this is about the issue of draping not dragging out the debate about home study, stonebridge etc.... lets give susan some credit in making a decision based on her situation and financial commitments etc....

I definately think you tube would be your first port of call and perhaps book in a few massages for yourself at local salons to see how they do it, or even see if there are any therapists in your area to do therapy swaps with. Perhaps a training company with a tutor near you can offer you a day practical training - theres lots of options available to help you.

I'd suggest you go to a college and book yourself in for a treatment with one of their students, so you can see how they do it! This option may not be available to you until February, when the students mostly get "let loose" on paying clients, but it's well worth it. If you can't wait until then, then book yourself in with a therapist for a massage and see what they do.

I do understand all of this and that is why i am doing my best to be as good as any other therapist. I do not want to go out there and just do it any old how and take the risk at injuring someone and again that is why i am doing my best to get as much information as i can and to get into a local salon etc to get some hands on training which i do actualy have to do some in a salon to get my certificate from the college. Thank you Isis-training for that information and support which is what i also need. I have also got the chance to do a course threw my son's school on complementary therapies which i am going to do but again i know it is not quite the same but if i only come out at the end with a bit extra knowledge to me it would be worth it. I am hoping the salon will help alot too but if i am still unsure i will do even more training where possible. Thank you again Isis-training

the problem is, I am a massage therapist, and I do not want to be branded with the same brush as anyone doing distance learning courses, sorry, its my opinion, yes, you can find draping techniques on youtube etc, yes you can buy videos, but goodness me, if that is what massage training has come to, then its shameful (but great for those running distance learning and 1 day practitioner workshops!)

Anyone can read the hundreds of postings on here about distance learning massage courses, and make an informed decision about how bad they are...and yes, I have seen their learning materials so I do know how bad they are....if they choose to opt to go down that route with a view to setting up in business then I have a right to come on here and view my opinions, as a bona fide well trained massage therapist with many years experience.

I stand by my comments.

And just to keep it on topic, yes you can view draping techniques on youtube.

off topic for a moment, to pick up on fasciaman's coments, surely if these courses are not accepted by professional associations that have actually set the standards, I think this would then mean that these courses are uninsurable, unless these distance learning colleges have set up insurance companies aswell ?

back on topic, the quality of some of the presentations on youtube whether it be draping, massage or any other should be regarded in much the same way as you would view wikipedia information, it is not necessarily factually correct

Yes i understand that but i have also said that i am going to get as much practical training as possible as i am not a big headed type of person who thinks that it is all so easy and can go out and just do it as i know this is not the case. It is something that i am not taking lightly and yes there is people out there that will just go and do it and start giving therapists bad names etc but i am not going to be one of those people and just for the record i have just done a beginners buisness course too and that was not distance course.

OK the answer is very simple, go and see a couple of therapists in your area and ask them if you can do a couple of exchanges with them.

That way you see not only how to address the towel issue but how to massage, exchanging is an excellent way to learn as you will receive constructive criticism and probably more practical hands on information than you would on a night school course

I trained with ITEC, the most important thing to remember when draping is modesty and then warmth and comfort. We only expose the area being massaged and then covered that area up before moving on to the next area. It is quite simple but I would watch someone else do a massage via u tube to observe it, you may not see what you need by being the recipient. We usually had a large towel to cover the top half, often down to knees and then two separate smaller towels to cover each leg. When working on one leg we would fold back the large towel and then use one of the smaller towels at an angle to cover the leg not being massaged.

You need to practise turning over, you need a large towel and make sure the client rolls towards you so they do not fall off the couch and so you are able to control holding the towel so they can roll without getting caught up in it. It does take practice but gets easier, remember to maintain modesty, then keep them warm and you can not go wrong, good luck!

Thank you so much for that. I have looked at a video and i think it is just remembering how they go but like i say i have only seen one and i wasn't sure if there was different ways just like the massage a some start on the clients back some start on the front.

Good luck on your course - you sound very dedicated and committed. I agree 100% with Paul that the best thing you can do is massage swaps with another therapist. You'll be amazed at how much you'll learn and you'll come on leaps and bounds.
