Assuming you got your resident cat when he was a kitten, he still is very much a kitten, so the age difference is not that great. Hissing and growling is common, as suddenly there is a challenge to his alpha status.
Keep the kitten in your room, at least until you get it checked by a vet. You don't want to introduce anything to your cat. What I am primarily thinking is if the kitten has worms, and they share a litter box, both would have to be treated.
Then, when vet checked, you can switch rooms, and they get used to each others scents. And then more and more time together.
It simply will take some time and patience for them to get used to each other. And if both kittens, realize that kittens play rough. Very rough. So it is easy to over think what may be happening.
