I am a newbie guitar player and I need some help?

I don't understand the fret of the acoustic guitar,I know it's used to change the sound of a string from low to high. But how do you change it, are your fingers on the frets supposed to touch the string or what? Also can you give me a link to understand reading and playing tabs?

Your fingers should be pressing the strings down onto the frets. With your fingers on the strings, you strum with your other hand. The sound it produces should be clear, if not, you need to check you fingerings. I had a lot of trouble with this when I very first started. Just like anything, this takes practice. Your fingers should depress the strings against the fingerboard in between the frets. Try Youtube for instruction and inspiration.
