I can't work out how to introduce the hero's dog in my story?

It's set in the aftermath of a nuclear apocalypse, and the hero is walking a long a decimated street, and I've worked out when I want it to happen, but I can't do it and make it obvious that Cisco is a dog.

Make him an excitable dog that jumps up on folk and licks them to death

Dogs bark so if he barks at something then that would be as good an introduction as anything else. Good luck with your story.

Perhaps you could tell them that Cisco's a dog.

Maybe the dog carries something in his mouth to present to the hero, with tail wagging, anticipating praise.
