I need your input!

I live in a rural community of about 700 people, within 20 miles of me there are three other towns totaling about 11,000 people.  I currently operate a part time massage business that keeps me comfortably busy.  I may retire from my primary occupation in a few years and am considering my options for the future.  At the present time I do not envision the community I am in and those willing to commute from the surrounding communities to be enough clientele to sustain me full time.I have been playing with the idea of creating a very nice coteforum.xxxe looking mobile unit that could be easily be set up in the surrounding communities on scheduled days of the month to provide service to those areas.(Note)  I do not prefer to do out calls because of the extra wear and tear on me, the limited control of the environment, and the extra time that is involved.1      Has anyone here had any experience with a mobile massage practice?2      Tell me what your impressions and concerns are.  I really would like some honest feedback here.Thanks,TMT

I have heard of this working for hair stylists and dog grooming. Why not massage? You may start a trend. All the best to you whatever you decide.Pamrose

Depending on the social climate it may work out very well for you.  Would also give you the opportunity to set it up at county fairs or other big events in your area.

Sure sounds like it would work to me.  And I noticed you're in central Texas....most folks in Texas are pretty friendly, so I would guess the social aspect of it would not be a problem.  Some people might see you and say 'hey, I could use a massage,' who might otherwise not come in.  And the idea of setting up at events like fairs is a very good idea. ;D

I had the thought of purchasing an RV and customizing it for a mobile service to corporate america.  The only draw back is the time, linens and expense of maintaining it.  I have a good practice and don't need the hassel.  But would suggest it for someone much younger with less limitations.

Hi,I just wanted to add that if you are going into other towns with your business you should check out local ordinances and statutes with regard to massage therapy.   You should be able to find info at the zoning offices at city hall.Around here (CT) they vary from town to town.  I had a friend who actually had to get fingerprinted before she could set up a massage business from her home.  Good luck with it!H

Kimberly,Modifying an RV would be an expense but maintaining one shouldn't be costly at all.  Plenty of room for linens if you designed it that way.  The initial cost would be high unless you found a used one that would work.  How would you market to corporations though?  Sounds like a possibility for some of us in smaller towns with larger ones fairly close.
