IC pregnancy leave-unemployment benefit?

Just curious if anyone here has advice for Mom to be leaving work as an independent contractor, working for a spa. I know that if I worked for a corporation or the Govn'mnt I'd be able to get pregnancy leave and benefits, but obviously as a self employed MT that's not going to happen.

Anyone here know if I'm entiled to enemployment bennefits for a period of time til I can get back to working?

it depends on the size of the business. we had our receptionist go on mater. leave at my office job. i don't remember the law exactly cuz it was over a year ago. since we had less than 25 people, they weren't required to pay for mat. leave. i'm not sure about the benefits. she didn't come back to work.

I think that the key word here is "independent contractor."

As an independent contractor you are basically self-employed. As an independent contractor you're not an employee, therefore you're not entitled to any type of employee benefits. Only employees qualify for unemployment compensation.

Depends, Varies by state

In some states, IC's are supposed to pay a Self Employment Tax in addition to their regular income tax.

SET covers such things as worker's comp and unemployment. But check your state laws - unemployment usually covers only those laid-off or fired. Voluntary unemployment - take this job and shove it, or maternity leave - often are not covered.
