IGPP becomes The Complementary Therapy Assoc

Has anyone else read about the above?
The IGPP is to change it's name to the Complementary Therapists Association (CthA).

I think it is nice that we are at last to have the title Complementary Therapist!

The new logo and brand name is to be "EMBODY" and it will be split into separate membership associations, so that each person can join the relevant one or ones.

It does of course mean having to change business cards etc, although the suffix MIGPP will still be recognised for some time.

i dont like the idea of joining the different groups though... all at seperate cost? hmmmmm

Ro¤ie, there will be no additional charge for each therapy - they say you can be a member of each applicable association at no extra charge :

Depending on your qualifications you can be in any number of the bodies and the membership cost will be the same regardless of the number you choose to join

Hi I used to be a member of the GCP then the IGPP but wasnt gaining any actual benefit so stopped.

My one initial concern on reading this is that organisations need to be consistent and strong, not changing there name every couple of years, they will never get established in the public mind until they settle and stay and grow and market with that name.... if i were a lay person I would be wary of any organisation that kept changing it names, you tend to think reputable one dont do this so it can cast an uneccessary shadow.....

I think that Complementary Therapists Association is a much better name, seems more reflective of the membership and what they do.

I have been considering joining on and off for the past year or so, last month even investigated their insurance to see if i wanted to move to it - decided not. To be perfectly honest I'm not sure what the benefit to me as a private practitioner will be. I would love to hear the experiences of others in this and what they get from their membership.

I read about this too in IGPP's magazine and I do find it a bit worrying. Like Tigerbee, I have been a member of ITEC professionals and IGPP, but haven't really had any benefit from it. I now feel that although Complementary Therapist's Association is a more understandable title, EMBODY is dreadful and is corporatising us [:'(]. I know we don't have to claim we are an EMBODY professional, but what if a year down the line they want us all to put this on our marketing. There is the possibility that they may then begin to impose restrictions on us, such as uniforms, brands, towel colours etc just so we all look the same and have an EMBODY image. What lead me to believe this, is that they are looking at setting up franchises. Maybe I'm wrong and i'm a bit of a conspiracy theorist, but..

I am happy being me and doing things my own way.

Well....we cannot have it both ways: either the association has to be represent us and act for us, or it is there to regulate us because the law requires it. In another thread somewhere, http://www.healthypages.net/forum/tm.asp?m=116717 Professional Associations: IGPP/BCMA/ITPI/FHT etc I asked the question about what people felt about their various professional bodies.

Here in the USA, where the main bodywork/multi-modal body, the Associated Bodywork and Massage Professionals has become the leading association for bodywork basically covers the complementary therapies including massage. Massage Therapists have another choice - the American Massage Therapy Association, which is more massage driven, but more political as in they push for the regulation of massage. There are a few other smaller bodies, but really only these two big boys.

The good thing about their size is that they can afford to provide loads of services for the members - see my posting above to see what the ABMP gives me. I regret the fact that when I leave the USA, I'll probably have to withdraw from them, and just keep my APNT/BCMA combo deal. It's just nice to know that I am getting something for my bucks, something I've not felt the IGPP/Embody has given me. Right now I have just joined the APNT, and I don't know what I will get from them either. But in terms of size, you can see that the UK bodies are too disparate, too small to really have the mass to provide services to the members.

If it's only insurance we want, perhaps it is better just to negotiate with an insurer who regularly handles complementary therapies... But I keep the hope alive that somehow, our UK bodies are doing something for me! I mean, as a member of the APNT, I pay a little more for my BCMA registration, and if I were to really pursue it, will separately have to join the Aromatherapy Register... which is another lot of fees. And this would be just to make sure I'm included when aromatherapy self-regulation goes live...
