ihm and drug or alcohol use

I just wanted some clarification on the reasons that ihm should not be performed on someone has either had alcohol or drugs (particularly opiates) ~ I ask because I work for a substance misuse service and want to bring IHM in here but most things I have read would say this is a contra indication - just to be clear, I am not talking about working on people who are massively intoxicated, more about people who have a physical addiction and so who have it in their symptom only to stop them going into withdrawals.

Would be grateful for any info.
