It's a mark of ownership: the father "owned" his children. They were "given" to him by God. And maybe on some tangent, to remind them of what sort of slaves they were, and what sort of slaves they are.

the first circumcisions were done by Abraham on himself and all of the males in his family/household not all were babies. That had to be a terrifying day for those servants who were told to line up and someone was holding a very sharp knife.
