Income potential?

I'm helping me niece on her project. She's doing a science project as using massage therapy as her topic. She emailed a whole bunch of questions, the only one I'm iffy on is income potential since it can differ so much.

What do you think average income for part and full therapists range at?

And what would you typically classify as part time vs full time?

Hi Louise,

This depends on the average rate for a therapist in your area. You can Google an independent therapist (or 5) and see what they charge for a one hour swedish massage. Multiply that number by 20 and you have an average for a 'full-time' massage therapist's gross income per week.

Remember, the rates can differ and some therapists do things other than massage, like teaching, continuing education and other work. This increases their income potential but the formula above will give you an idea.

I would say, generically, if you figure the person charges $60/hour and works:

10 hours a week x 50 weeks (figure you miss 2 weeks total through the year in vacation, sick days, and con ed.) = $30,000

20 hours a week x 50 weeks = $60,000

30 hours a week x 50 weeks = $90,000

just generically.

I think you would have to subtract all overhead costs if figuring this way.
