Is asking a girl out over text or Internet chat socially acceptable?

Two of my friends at least were asked out through text message or facebook chat and they both said yes to the asker outer. Is that an ok thing to do nowadays? I always thought that was a serious no-no.

Haha, I'd say it's a chicken way of asking someone out. I mean, you can ask to hang out with someone, but you can't ask to like... go steady with someone over text or the internet. That's just dumb.

its accepted these days.
for a couple reasons
1)the girl will go only if she really wants to. because she wont feel put on the spot when asked.
2)you get more time to think. and you say it smoother.

but if you CAN do it face to face and have the balls. then go for it.
she will probably fall for you harder.
