Or does no one want to actually HIRE a massage therapist? THey just want to RENT to one.

I have been calling around all over the dang state, calling and sending resumes to places that I KNOW in the past have had MTs on staff, only to find now that they are just looking to rent room space. This is so frustrating for me right now. Even the listings for my states job service website are not positions - just rental space available. Has it always been this way? I just want a little security here folks!

Even the local Lady Wellness (a chain of upscale womens only fitness facility with spa) is changing. When they do their restructure within the company they will just be RENTING their spa space to independant contractors. Do they realize they loose all quality control and brand continuity? My local site would want up to $250 a week for room rental.

Ugh.

This is just a correction

1) Employees are expensive, and most places are not set up to handle them properly
2) Many states, CA leading the way, have now decided the best way to balance the budget is to crack down on labor violations and fine their way to prosperity, not realizing they are killing the job creators along the way. It is easy to run afoul of the IC vs. Emp issue, since there is no black and white in the matter, so you are subject to the whims of the board, which are looking to increase revenue -- so guess your chances of prevailing.

Rentals do create a quality issue, but they probably realize the loss of business due from quality complaints is less onerous than managing employees.

Those places that have employees are offering OT when it is available instead of bringing on someone new and diluting the work across more hands. Also typical in a down cycle. Average work week always gets longer until you can truly justify another hire.

I see its in their best interested to rent rather then hire. I get it, I just don't want to deal with it.


I did get hired though. Just a few hours ago actually I am sure I will need work on the side, but thats fine for me - I like to diversify my time anyway. Happy to have a real massage job.

Thank you! I am super excited to go back to my school and work in their professional clinic, with hopes of getting my foot in the door for an intstructor position as one opens up. :grin: :grin: :grin:
