Is it odd to introduce yourself using a nickname?

Well my real name is alexandra and no one calls me that except for my grandpa. Everyone calls me allie. If its volunteer work, then I wouldn't worry too much about it. You can start off with ur real name but if you feel like the situation is cool then you can just say you can call me whatever. Good luck.

The only person who calls me by my actual name is my mother.
I introduce myself by my real name but then tell people that everyone calls me by my nickname. Also if you was to call me by my real name I wouldn't respond as I have been called by my nick name for the past 13 years.

I think it seems normal to introduce yourself as what everyone usually calls you. You are more likely to respond to a nickname than your real name in most cases. Especially if it is for volunteer work. I have a friend that never goes by his first name, only his middle name, so he doesn't reply when you call him my his real first name. I think if you are volunteering and working with a group of people trying to accomplish something as a team, you need to be alert and know when someone needs you lol.

Yes it's odd because by giving a nickname you give the person the feeling that you are not serious about your work.
