was she joking or is this a tradition?
I am a non Muslim and his mother said this to the girl that I know about 8 months into our relationship (before i met them)
Both of his parents are aware of my culture (italian/english) and they approve of our relationship
 
This is a common tradition in Islam, you are lucky that you met his parents so soon. You are supposed to meet his parents once you are engaged but they don't always follow their traditions.
