Is there a way to recover chats on facebook?

My daughter is being bullied by a girl from her school. She has harrassed her through Facebook chat among other things.
We tried to find the chats, but some are missing for some reason. My husband and I both read a couple of them this spring at the time they were sent. So we know some are missing.
Is there any way we can find the missing chats? If the other girl deleted what she wrote so that the proof of her bullying was gone, would that also delete them from my daughters chat history?
I really don't know if this is possible and I hope you can understand what I'm asking.

Go into messages, top left, second icon.

find a message from the person

when you go in it will show the chat conversation and you can keep scrolling and it will offer 'earlier messages' keep going through that.

EDIT:

chat and messages are the same, messages sent will appear in a chat conversation and chat messages sent will be viewable as messages
 
Actually you can click the message button at the top and find the bully and scroll through all the messages. It should go back to the way beginning of the first time they talked. And please report this to the police. There's a new law that's being passed that cyber-bullying is illegal. So if the harassment continues, get the police involved. GOOD LUCK!
