Hello

I'm just starting out as a reflexologist and although it's only natural I am a little nervous about seeing my first fewclients. I worry that I find it hard to pick up on crystals/blockages on the feet.ShouldI expect to feel something on every client? I can't imagine is always the case or maybe my technique is wrong. I obviouslywant my clients to feel like I'm doing my job right andthey are getting a wonderful treatment so they hopefully come back for more. Would any experiencedreflexologist have some advice for me and helpmeto calm my nerves.

Hiya I am just recently qualified and also feeling quite nervous - I am especially nervous when people ask me questions like - ''what are you working on now - oh the thymus - right , remind me what does the thymus gland do? '' and I then think - oh my goodness - I just cannot remember!! It is questions like what does that gland do? I have such a thing (illness) what can I press to relieve it! I am still feeling like a fraud that I should know more stuff !

It will come with practice and experience and lots of reading ! I am on the internet most days researching new things ! The internet at the moment is my best friend - I have a 13 year old and a 2 year old - so hormones raging and terrible twos starting !! How can I take in all this information when the two of them are screaming at each other !! I am sure it will all fit into place eventually!

Congratulations and good luck with just starting out.

Where did you do your training?

You'll usually findthatyou'llget some imbalance somewhere on the feet but sometimes it's only tiny bits, especially on the first treatment.

I remember it's a bit nerve racking when you first start to do treatments but you'llsoon get used to it andonce you meet the new client and you've done your consultation your nerves will disappear as you'll get chatting 'cause the client usually wants to tell you all their woes. That's as it should be though because it's part of the treatment and it also helps you be at your ease aswell.

As for the questions ha ha,,,,I always try and answer where I can but I've learnt that its better sometimes to just tell the client the bare minimum they need to know as their brain goes into overdrive and they start imagining all sorts!

If they ask 'what's that bit then?' it's better to just say what 'system' it's part of and what it helps with rather than going into specifics e.g. if it's the thyroid you're working on just say, ' oh, that's part of your endocrine system, working this helps with hormone balance bla, bla, bla!

TJG - If they say they have an illness and want to know what bits to 'press' I tell them it's not just one reflex that's worked it's a whole lot of reflexes which work together to help balance the body and that's why it's best to go to an qualified practitioner (like you!) who knows how best to deal with it.

Don't feel like a fraud,,, if you've done the training and you've passed the exams then you're the real macoy,,,, BELIEVE IN YOURSELF.

Thanks for your reply it really put my mind at ease.I think the key is to believe in yourself I did my training at Barnfield college in Luton.Could you recommend any good extra reading material on reflexology?

If you go on the search facility on here and type in the 'search term' box 'reflexology books' it may give you some pointers.

My two favorite books are the Ross and Wilson Anatomy & Physiology in Health and Illness by Anne Waugh and Allison Grant and the Anatomy Coloring Book by Wynn Kapit/Lawrence M Elson. I know they're not Reflexology books but I find I refer to these more than the Reflex books.

I am just starting out as well having just qualified last week. I found that when I did the case studies and was treating often 3 clients a day I could pick things up after a couple of treatments. It got better towards the end. Final assessments at college involved seeing a client for the first time in the college salon (just like the real thing!) and I found nothing on 2 out of the 3 final assessments! One client insisted that if I found anything not to tell her! The others enjoyed the relaxation more than anything else!
