Hi


My mother's been diagnosed with some loss of kidney function. It's age-related and high BP related. Can anyone say which natural remedy works best for this - reflexology, acupuncture, massage, anything else? ANY holistic remedy, tablet, etc, you could recommend? Both to reduce the BP and improve kidney function?

Drink 6 glasses of water with a pinch of bicarbonate of soda in each glass (even A&E units in hospitals are using this safe and simple method to recover kidneys.
Stopping starchy carbs will also help this and lower the HBP fast.

One can use dry or fresh organic parsley to make tea. If a person would rather not drink parsley tea, the tea can be stirred into soups or stews after cooking is finished. A glass of iced parsley tea is fairly refreshing. Parsley helps the kidneys to clean themselves. Although it is not an issue regarding your mother, I will mention that parsley tea should not be used by pregnant women.

A few spears of asparagus eaten several days in a row will also stimulate the kidneys to cleanse themselves. One will initially notice a strong, unpleasant odor upon urinating. Each day the odor will become less and less as the toxins are eliminated.

Is she on medication? Methinks strong grounds for suspicion that she is.

Before doing anything go through the meds list with a fine toothcomb and beg, plead, cajole, (terrify if necessary) the doctor to take a good look at anything on there that may interfere with kidney function.

Otherwise, kidney impairment is often secondary to sluggish bowels, so make sure that departments's all fine.

Otherwise, please be wary of beginning any special treatments, natural or otherwise without having a proper consultation IN PERSON to consider the entire context of the problem. Increasing water intake above normal could make things worse if the kidneys are struggling, so really get tailored advice on this, there isn't enough info in your post to go on, and it would be irresponsible to advise in this context anyway.

Blood pressure and kidney function are linked and a catch 22 situation can arise. High BP puts the kidneys under pressure and kidney impairement raises the bp. Check all meds for kidney impairment especially anti-inflammatories and don't make any major changes without consulting your GP. Things that need to be considered are - age, stress, diet, daily water intake and exercise.

Just wondering, Does your mum have lupus?
My mum has this condition, same problem, 2 months ago she was told there was good chance of having to have dialysis, not good news. Yes the blood pressure does affect kidney function, the first port of call is lowering the blood pressure which is what the doc should be doing?, this should help with kidney function, this is the only info I can give, I wouldn't advise anything to you though, as kvdp said, there is no sufficient information from you and I dont think it would be right in these circumstances. Please get as much info from her GP specialist as possible, I imagine she is aware of certain foods/drinks NOT to take etc. Hope this helps a little X

KDVP - you're bang on the money re 'sluggish bowels' - that seems to have cleared up now, following a higher-fibre diet, and my mum's been fine; energetic, good colour, etc etc; and then the doc. dropped the kidney bombshell! (Is there any chance kidneys can improve once the bowel problem seems to have been sorted, in your experience?)

You - and everyone else who suggested it could be caused by meds - also prob./possibly bang on - she's been on meds for her heart for some years now, following an attack of costochondritis, and irregular heartbeat. Because of the meds, she's been having regular blood checks for kidney problems, etc, which is how they now discovered there's a problem. However, the GP assured her the kidney problem WASN'T connected to the meds.

I'd quite like her to come off the meds, at least for a while, but there's always the risk the heart problem will come up again. GGGRRRRR. Don't know whether or not to believe doc - is v. likely kidney probs could be caused by irregular heartbeat(?)

Will def. be checking out what to do and not to do with her GP/pharmacist (and if it's OK, will definitely be following the advice given here).

Is also interesting re fluid intake - my initial reaction would have been to drink more water, flush kidneys out, etc, but have also heard that's not the thing to do.

Clarice08 - no, it's not lupus, thanks, though. I hope your Mum improves! Will send her a prayer, if that's OK. It's so frightening when it happens, isn't it ...!

Well my mum is ok for now, saw her consultant yesterday and he doesn't need to see her till dec so 2 months of not worrying too much, thank you for your kind words, it's very hard because I dont live so close but she also had a look around the dialysis unit etc and even met some people she knew there too!, small world, think that was a comfort for her, keeping my fingers and everything else crossed and do I hope your get some answers for your mum soon honey, Lots of love x x

As far as reducing blood pressure, hence alleviate some pressure on the kidneys, have a look at the info here. There are studies which have shown that both celery and beetroot make a difference to high blood pressure.

If you look at the leaflet in the medication boxes, it should explain what side effects may be expected an some of them have a considerably long list of very nasty side effects (whatever the Dr may deny).

Hello,
I would have to say try changing diet and lifestyle. Perhaps try reflexology kidney cleanse. Not sure how much info or alternative therapies you wont to try but kidneys are your main power source or chi so she might be lacking in energy if theres a problem with them. Kidneys problems can relate to fear....we hold fear in our kidneys. Acupuncture would be good to, but it just depends on the person..and what they are open to.
