There is no legal age minimum for the consumption of alcohol. You must be at least 18 to buy alcohol. You must be at least 18 to work in a bar. You must be at least 20 to enter a bar (unless you work there).

Farangs who look even close to 18 are rarely challenged to produce proof of age.

Really? Myself and another from our group will both be at least a few months under 20 when we go. Neither of us look that young though. Think we need to be careful what places we go to?

Also, any idea of what the punishment would be? A simple fine or something more serious?

Singapore girl got arresting in BKK for being 19 in a bar.. Thrown in jail and was hard to reach her parents (also holidaying in BKK) who then came to bail her out.. If she hadnt had anyone to help it would have been a drama.. She was bailed and fined in the AM.. Without someone to bail her she might have been in the system a few days sorting a lawyer and things from the inside without support can be impossible.

Very unusual and very rare but did happen and it was all posted on ThaiVisa..

I always say you wouldnt abuse the law back home by ignoring legal drinking age, so why do it on holidays. You should respect the law of land that you are visiting.

Having said that, I suggest that you stick to the smaller bar beers and give the larger gogo's and discoes a miss.

I'm a little bit confused & somewhat put off a little, after reading a recent thread where a BM said he had taken his children to the MTB whilst on hols. It was also said by Nicke that children were welcome at his bar.
(I posted my query here, rather than hijack the BM's thread, which is about his hols.)

After reading the above quote from Tyfon & after reading what the BM & Nicke said, can anyone see why I'm confused??

The thing is open air beer bars are open to the street.. so the distinction between being in a public place and being in the bar is very grey area..
