licence for music

We were talking the other day and couldn't come to a conclusion on whether or not one needs a licence to play music during therapies. Surely not in the clients homes, as it is their choice and stereo, but what if we brought the music. ANd what about in a clinical setting, does ine need a licence in a therapy room?
The question originally came up because we were talking about yoga teachers needing a licence...do they or don't they? One lady who was an aerobics instructor in a gym said she needed a licence or risked a £2000++ fine. So we couldn't conclude. Any thoughts?

when using music in class instruction you do need a ppl licence, most instructors,now buy ready made music with beats and phrasing done at source, these are usually membership type clubs and licence is included in monthly fee, i have never heard that it is needed in a clinic environment or 1,2,1 basis, but a good question just sorry I cant answer it

My local hairdressers had to get a licence to play the radio or music where the clients could here it. I would guess its the same in a clinic as its a commercial setting. If I remember its the Performing Rights Society that provides the licence.

Copyright on the material usually states that it is for personal use only and may not be lent, borrowed etc. or used for public performance. If you are treating members of the public then you are playing the music to a public audience (even if that's just one person) and therefore constitutes public performance. There again, what is the chance of a record company coming along to your therapy room and checking what music you have playing. If you have a client there the chances are that they aren't going to come into the room at that time, and when the clients not there you would only be listening to your own music which is permissable. Really the clause is in the copyright to stop mass public performance of the music.

Thanks for the advice guys, i'm doing loads of tasters next week and was wondering if I could play music there. Last thing I want is a massive fine, but maybe I would only be asked to turn it off in a first offense (here's hoping)...
