Massage therapist Maureen O'Connell has been operating in her field for 16 years, and shows no signs of slowing down.
She recently moved her Manchester-based business to Downtown Manchester.
She said she sees herself as a conduit to help clients hone in on energy that is built up in the body, which causes tight muscles.
"When people come here, they experience a calm, relaxing atmosphere that can lead to pain and stress relief through quality massage," O'Connell said. "People heal themselves and you just show them a way to allow it."
O'Connell shares the space with acupuncturist, Edwin Brown. The two businesses shared a space for over a decade at a previous location in Manchester, and decided to stick with one another.
"We share the same philosophy of the mind, body, and spirit," O'Connell said. "In order to truly be there for others in our lives, we must take care of ourselves along the way."
O'Connell's services offered include acupressure, chair massage, deep tissue massage, pregnancy massage, reflexology, sports massage, Swedish relaxation, and trigger point massage.
Olive oil is the primary oil used during her massages, because clients may have an allergic reaction to essential oils, O'Connell said.
Massages can be from a half hour, up to an hour and a half. Clients can also request home visits or services for parties.
O'Connell became a massage therapist after embarking on her own wellness journey, after having health issues. She said that she searched for different treatments and that massage served as a way to help her physical and mental health.
"It's literally a way to touch people's lives and help people feel better," the American Massage Therapy Association member said.
O'Connell's office provides a quiet space and the massage room is dimly lit. She said she offers a nurturing approach, which some may have only received as a young child. Many of her clients have "hit bottom" and have given so much of themselves to others or have experienced some type of trauma - like a car accident.
"It makes your body slow down and makes you realize you need to take care of yourself, eat better, stretch every day. Massage therapy can be a part of that wellness plan," O'Connell said.
She added that massage therapy can be a way to prevent some health issues, because it increases circulation, increases mobility, and can positively affect emotional wellbeing.
"It's like getting through the body armor, which we need a lot to face the world, but it gets tiring," O'Connell said.
A perk of having such a long career is that the now adult children of patients have started to come in. O'Connell ends up working on entire families, she said.
"It tells me that it's helping their lives and that's really great to see," O'Connell said.
