TEMPLE, Texas (KWTX) A woman who told officers she had arranged to meet a man for “massage services” ended up the victim of a carjacking, but the suspect was later arrested after he walked into the lobby of the Temple Police Department and said he wanted to talk to a detective about the robbery.
The suspect, who was not identified, was detained without incident, police Cpl. Christopher Wilcox said Wednesday.
The carjacking was reported at around 12:20 p.m. Tuesday in the 2600 block of North 1st Street in Temple.
The victim, whom police did not identify, told officers she “had met the suspect online and reported meeting the individual in person to provide massage services,” Wilcox said.
The would-be masseur displayed a handgun, ordered the victim out of her vehicle and drove off, Wilcox said.
Other officers spotted the stolen car near the 1500 block of South Martin Luther King, Jr., Drive and attempted to pull it over, but the suspect refused to stop, he said.
The carjacker headed south on South MLK, turned on to Little River Road and then onto Blackland Drive, where he accelerated and sped away from officers at more than 80 miles per hour, headed toward 31st Street, Wilcox said.
Because of safety concerns about lunch hour traffic on 31st Street, officers ended their pursuit and established a perimeter, but lost sight of the suspect after he turned south on South 31st, Wilcox said.
Officers found the stolen car abandoned at around 12:30 p.m. in the 1400 block of Paseo Del Oro and recovered the victim’s stolen property, including her cellphone, which contained a photo of the suspect.
At about the same time, a resident in the 1800 block of South Martin Luther King found a handgun near the roadway, which police think the suspect discarded while fleeing from officers, Wilcox said.
