Looking for advice

This will be my first trip to CR. Flying in on Wednesday and before driving to Jaco (my first hotel stop) I was thinking about visiting Bonitas for an hour session. I have couple of questions I was hoping to run by you guys;

-- should I use my rental car to get to Bonitas or park it and take taxi
-- considering that my landing at 2PM what can I expect in terms of traffic
-- and lastly any tips on "procedures" at Bonitas?

You may want to forget the car in SJO as it is very easy and cheap to go anywhere you need with a taxi... Plus, finding your destination, parking, etc. is such a hassle...
You can also get a driver to take you to Jaco, but if you have time on your hands\ and don't mind poor roads, then why not...

Hire Inmassageplanetus to drive you to Jaco much cheaper and safer. Do a search for inmassageplanetus! Take a taxi into SJ.

I agree with the other guys, it is best not to rent and drive; do take a cab and/or a bus.

As Americans, particularly those from the western states, holding on to and protecting your wheels is like holding on to and protecting your privates. An automobile is not necessarily an extension of one's persona.

Think of it like being in a major city like New York City or San Francisco: it is much easier and far more convenient to take cabs and or public transportation. Quite frankly it is more cost effective (both time and money) to take cabs and public transportation.

Frequently I take the bus and/or taxi cabs and I live here, have a car and know the geography fairly well.

Unless you have an obvious and compelling need to rent a car, DON’T. If you ding the rental car, or even if you didn’t and they say you did, you are on the hook for the repairs. Moreover, it is almost impossible to travel to Jaco or some other destination without getting a ding.

And driving in Costa Rica can be more than a challenge particularly if you do not know where you are going. Costa Rican maps are crude at best. If you are trying to find something you will discover there are few streets, and if there is a street sign it is small and easily missed.

Directions are given by selecting a "landmark" such as the Mercedes Benz building and then explaining that you should go 100 meters north and 200 meters west. But they may or may not tell you that the Mercedes Benz building is really the Scotia Bank building.

Take a cab. It will reduce your grief factor tremendously.

Dude, for a first trip, or any trip for that matter, driving in CR sucks. I did it on my first trip and made a wrong turn, the drive took me 5 hours, and I speak pretty good conversational Spanish and was able to ask for help although it was pointless. As far as driving it to an MP, I wouldn't dare, to a TIco, a rental car is an ATM machine on wheels. NEVER EVER leave valuables in your car, either take them with you or lock them in the trunk. Driving in CR is very frustrating unless you arrive in a small town and just drive in that town which taxis are cheap anyway. THere are no road signs making it difficult and what they call a great highway could be a 2 lane narrow road winding through mountain communities.

The guy that recommended InterBus is right on.

I agree with everyone above. Inmassageplanetus is the way to go.

I only had about 2 hours sleep the night before leaving Jaco. I would have never made it back to San Jose if I had been driving.

On top of that, renting a car is too expensive, gas prices are rediculous and if you have any damage you will pay for it first then try to get it straightened out with your insurance or credit card companies.

It just ain't worth it.

BTW, what/where is "Bonitas"?

I agree with all the above. You will do yourself an enormous favor by reading the board, then making trip decisions:

Rental car: Bad, bad idea. Pouring money down a hole and you have to constantly watch the hole.

Jaco: Bad idea for a first trip. Come to San Jose and learn the lay of the land, then go to Jaco if you really have a jones to. Jaco is hot hot hot and dirty with little to do between girls.

Bonitas: Notice that none of us have heard of the place? Think it is a hot spot that we have just overlooked or a ripoff joint that we don't even consider finding?

As everyone else has said--taxi, inmassageplanetus, NO RENTAL!! I have rented a car many, many times over the years, but would never recomend it to a newbee. I live here now and do not have nor need a car.

Mrmrmr: Session there one time with just about any chica there and you WILL KNOW WHY!!!

And A612K as for proceedures at Bonitas; it is just as any other LOW RENT MP here; just go in, meet the chicas, pick out the one you like the most, talk to her for a few (ask about type of service she will provide and any special request you may have). If she is what you want go to room, pay, and then ENJOY!! :twisted:
