LOWER BACK WHEN LAID DOWN!!!!!

Hi every one first time using this i have had back pain for several years only when lying in bed and has been in various beds i have seen a private consultant last year who gave me an mri scan he has advised me that i have slight height loss on my two lower discs ls/4 ls/5
he has told me i need disc fusion surgery to remove the two discs. my only worry is that this probelm only occurs when lying i have no pain whatsoever during the day and have full movement in my back so i am very concerned that this surgery is not necessary can anyone help??? as im due to go for the surgery on tuesday and am very worried its not needed

have responded to your other post before reading this one. in your situation, i would strongly recommend that you postpone surgery until you are absolutely certain that this is what you want to do. it's so easy to be swayed by 'experts' but it's not his back is it? get more opinions, see chiropractors, osteopaths, kinesiologists, reiki master, whatever, before you make a decision. do some research on the net, as you are doing here. it is always wise to be fully informed before taking irreversible steps, especially when it concerns something as crucial to your wellbeing as your spine!

Hi, I totally agree, do not have surgery as you are not sure about the reasons for having it.
Also consider working with an exercise specialist who can help strengthen the core surrounding your problem. I too recently had my surgery cancelled (19/04) due to illness, I am now so pleased as I was due to have shoulder replacement after 23 years of pain ,discomfort and several operations, it would have meant being out of action for approx 6 months. Im now more focussed than ever to rehabilitate and manage my condition.

You consulted a surgeon, who does surgery, if you had consulted a double glazing salesman he would have recommended a window that is iether easier to open or smaller. You get the drift ?
There are so many good therapists on this forum you should use their expertise and try all avenues before going under the knife.
Just a thought could you sleep standing up ?

I have just come accross your post and wondered if you have hsd your back problem sorted out yet? I have had many clients come to me with back pain after their GP has given up on them or it has been suggested that surgery or steroid injection is the only option. However, I can usually fix them but if I can't I send them to a sports injuries physiotherapist who usually does fix them. In 15 years I can't recall any of my clients undertaking surgery or spinal injections. Sorry it's late but I hope it helps.
PS Ask a physio to check your hip flexors (illiopsoas) as your problem sounds typical of tight hip flexor muscles.

Memory foam is great, get at least 3 inches and your nights will be much sweeter, and be very wary of any surgery on your back. The advice here is excellent, mostly, just cancel the surgery!

Why don't try to get a second medical advice? Wouldn't it be safer. Maybe your doctor is wrong and taking too much drastic measures to cure your pain...but maybe he is right but you dont want to consider this possibility and looking for every way to evade it...the only way to make sure is to get a second medical advice.
