A massage and holistic wellness center will be opening in Port Huron on July 9.
The center, named Indigo, will offer massage therapy, alternative medicine, nutritional counseling and cooking classes, herbal healing workshops and essential oil workshops.
All appointments are set up by appointment while new classes will be posted on the businessโs Facebook page as they are scheduled.
The wellness center has moved into an 800-square-foot storefront at 806 Lapeer Ave., Port Huron, in what was once a pawn shop.
Nathan Renner, 40, of Port Huron, began leasing the space in February. The space was nearly move-in ready, but needed some custom electrical work to accommodate a kitchen for the cooking workshops.
Renner has seven years of previous experience working as a massage therapist throughout the Blue Water Area at places such as River District Hospitalโs Healing Arts Center, and at a spa in Marine City. He was trained at Lakeview School of Therapeutic Massage in Port Huron.
Renner said he will be offering deep tissue massage, myofascial release massage, craniosacral therapy, shiatsu and sports medicine massages.
His cooking classes will include organic, raw, vegetarian and gluten free workshops.
He also hopes to be able to bring in other teachers who will offer drop-in workshops about canning and home remedies. Participants in those workshops would be invited to bring in wine and snacks to create a casual, night-out atmosphere while they learn.
โI want everyone to feel welcome here,โ Renner said. โI see it as a meeting space and open forum and I am really focused on the spirit-mind-body connection through the various holistic healing practices.โ

Renner feels his business fits in well with Port Huronโs blooming downtown economy.
โI really love seeing the renaissance of our town,โ he said. โI grew up here in the 1980s, moved away, and then moved back. Itโs good to see things starting to be like what they used to be back then.โ
And as for the business name, it was inspired by a few different things.
โThe front door handle is a dog and the best dog I ever had was a lab named Indigo,โ he said. โAnd Indigo is associated with intuition and the holy spirit, and can also be tied to the blue waters of the Blue Water Area.โ
