FRAZEYSBURG - It took about 30 years, but Robin Ritchie was finally able to check off a lifelong goal.
She is now a licensed massage therapist and operates Robin's Old School Massage. Her training was interrupted when she decided to work in cosmetology and then with children.
"I left the cosmetology field to work with children," Ritchie said. "I was a special needs provider (for 17 years) as a home aide, and then the parents moved. This was bucket list thing, and the timing just worked out for me to do it."
Robin's Old School Massage opened in November at the former elementary school building at 68 N. State St. and is open on Thursdays. Robin also offers massages at Small and Smart Beauty Salon in her hometown of Newark on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Fridays and Saturdays.
"My daughter moved to Frazeysburg several years ago, and I've just fallen in love with the town," Ritchie said. "I wanted to bring affordable massage to the small town."
While working to become a massage therapist, Ritchie said she saw how it could benefit the people she worked with as a home aide.
"I would massage the special needs young man, and it was so helpful, now his mom does it," Ritchie said. "My goal down the road is to get into a study to see how massage affects children with ADHD."
For Ritchie, being a massage therapist is another way to continue to help people.
"Being a caregiver is probably a big part of who I am," she said. "There are so many health benefits that come with massage, such as improved circulation and releasing muscle tension."
