Rochester City Council member Nick Campion said he's hoping to avoid a repeat of a July 5 hearing regarding the status of a license for massage therapy business.
That hearing, which included discussion of allegations regarding illegal sexual activity, was held during a council meeting that started with local Boy Scouts leading the Pledge of Allegiance.
Acknowledging the awkward discussions that occurred, Campion recommended holding future meetings outside of regular council meetings, which also frequently include high school students seeking class credit for attending local government meetings.
"I thought having the Boy Scouts and having some members of the public in the crowd when we were discussing sexual assaults and some of that activity just wasn't something that was in the best interest of the community," Campion said Monday.
His fellow council members agreed and set the planned hearing regarding potential sanctions for another massage therapy business for 5 p.m. Oct. 30, which is outside the regular council meeting. However, the meeting will follow open-meeting guidelines.
At the same time, the council will also hold hearings for two potential massage businesses facing potential denial of requested licenses.
