Massage directly on the skin as opposed to over clothing.

Hi everyone.

This is my first post on these pages, but I have been reading for months now as I am currently studying VTCT IHM and have found them all very helpful.

One question that is on my unit VR69 - knowledge and understanding is: Give an example of an occasion when you would massage directly over the skin as opposed ro over the clothing?
Is this just when the client is wearing really thick clothing and would not feel the benefit of the massage if it wasnt onto the skin?

I did the same course several years ago - and cannot remember this question being asked - I think it would be when doing an oil massage, which sounds a bit too obvious to me.

i am doing this course and next week i have to do an assessment on using oil so i would say it was that

The client will benefit from a deep massage
Client feels comfortable taking their clothes off
Massage moves will flow more easily
Therapist is able to use oils

I would say some/one of the following

When oil is being used,
when clients clothing would interfere with the treatment (shoulder pads, fasteners etc)
and perhaps most importantly when there are local contraindications (which the therapist must avoid) which cannot be seen under the clothing

Another reason for the use of oils would be for dry skin.

I just started studying IHM and we were talking about situations when you would perform the massage on skin rather than over clothes, the main one which was when a client arrives for a treatment wearing inappropriate clothes (too thick, roll necks, material which may cause friction etc) you would get them to undress and wear a towel wrap or similar.
