RIO GRANDE VALLEY – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) Department of Intercollegiate Athletics announced on Monday that junior J.C. Ariza, of the baseball team, is the Massage Envy Student-Athlete of the Week.
Ariza was named Western Athletic Conference of the Week after making two appearances for the Vaqueros last week.
Ariza started the midweek game against the Houston Baptist Huskies where he pitched four innings while tying a career-high with eight strikeouts and allowing just two hits as he took the no-decision in UTRGV's 8-7 win.
On Sunday, Ariza appeared out of the bullpen for the Vaqueros and pitch the final three innings of the series clinching win against Sam Houston for his first career save.
On the week, Ariza pitched in seven innings, allowed one run on four hits, with 10 strikeouts and two walks while opponents batted .160 off him.
On the season, Ariza is 1-0 with. a 3.57 ERA while pitching in 22.2 innings with 21 strikeouts and opponents batting just .198 against him.
The Vaqueros will be back in action on Tuesday at 6:30 p.m. when they visit #7 Texas in a game that will be televised on Longhorn Network.
