RIO GRANDE VALLEY – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) Department of Intercollegiate Athletics announced on Monday that redshirt junior Jesus Aldaz, of the baseball team, is the Massage Envy Student-Athlete of the Week.
Aldaz helped the Vaqueros clinch the series win over New Mexico State on Sunday after pitching a career-high tying six innings while racking up 10 strikeouts, the second highest of his career. Aldaz allowed five hits, all singles, while walking just one and was named the Western Athletic Conference Pitcher of the Week for his efforts.
Aldaz had a two-hit shutout going through 5.2 innings as he ended each of his six innings with a strikeout.
On the season, Aldaz improved to 4-3 with the win. He has pitched in 39 innings and has 51 strikeouts compared to 13 walks and 41 hits, which ranks fifth fewest in the WAC. Aldaz's 51 strikeouts rank fifth most in the WAC this season while also leading the WAC in strikeouts per game with 11.77.
UTRGV hosts future WAC opponent Incarnate Word on $2 Tuesday at 6:30 p.m. at UTRGV Baseball Stadium. General admission tickets and select concession items will be available for $2 or less.
