RIO GRANDE VALLEY – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) Department of Intercollegiate Athletics announced on Monday that redshirt freshman Randy Garza, of the baseball team, is the Massage Envy Student-Athlete of the Week.
Garza made two starts this week as he got the starting nod against No. 6 Texas and then earned a start on Sunday in Western Athletic Conference play against Tarleton.
In front of a sellout crowd of 6,418 at UTRGV Baseball Stadium, Garza made his third straight start on a Tuesday as he gave his team a chance against the No. 6 Longhorns. Garza pitched 3.2 innings while allowing four runs, just two earned, on three hits while striking out four.
On Sunday, Garza made the start against Tarleton as the Vaqueros looked to sweep the Texans. Garza pitched 4.0 innings while allowing just one run on one hit and recording a career-high seven strikeouts. Garza retired the first eight batters he faced before giving up a single in the fourth.
On the season, Garza is 1-1 with a 2.00 ERA and has pitched in 18 innings while allowing just four runs on 14 hits with 21 strikeouts.
UTRGV visits UTSA, a team who received votes in the latest NCBWA poll, on Tuesday at 6 p.m. Fans can watch online via CUSA TV.
