RIO GRANDE VALLEY – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) Department of Intercollegiate Athletics announced on Monday that senior Ricky Gerik Jr., of the baseball team, is the Massage Envy Student-Athlete of the Week.
Gerik made three appearances last week for the Vaqueros while earning a win and a save over 7.1 innings pitched. Gerik didn't allow any runs while scattering four hits and striking out eight.
Against Incarnate Word, Gerik entered in the top of the fifth with runners on the corners and just one out. He got an infield pop out and a strikeout to end the threat.
In the first game against Abilene Christian, Gerik came on in relief of Kevin Stevens and pitched 4.0 scoreless innings with five strikeouts as he earned his fifth save.
In the series finale, Gerik earned the win after pitching 2.2 innings of scoreless relief with two strikeouts as he earned his third win of the season.
On the season, Gerik has pitched in 23 games while posting a 3-3 record with a 1.42 ERA and five saves. He has pitched in 38.0 innings and has allowed just six earned runs while walking just 10 and striking out 46 batters.
Gerik ranks second in the Western Athletic Conference in appearances and fourth in saves.
UTRGV hosts #7 Texas for the first time in 51 years on Tuesday at 6:30 p.m. at UTRGV Baseball Stadium. The game is sold out, although tickets have been set aside for current UTRGV students, who get in free with their student ID.
