massage in pubs???

on saturday i went to pub to meet a friend and his mate and said mate was in the middle of having a massage (neck and shoulder)

i thought this was very dubious and i wasn't quite sure which discipline of massage the person was doing as it was a bit all over the place. to be honsest, i thought it was a friend of theirs having a go.

she was working on a donation basis "give me what you think it was worth"

she had a bag and a t-shirt with a name and logo

the massage only lasted 6 mins but still i just couldn't believe it, especially as afterwards the mate got up to go and get his "4th pint".

It's not something that I would want to be doing. The whole environment is wrong.

However, she may be looking at it as a way to get known - she has a captive audience, it's a place where people gather. So in some ways it's no different to, say, a noisy school indulgence evening, where everyone is given a free glass of wine with their entrance money.

Not saying I agree with it, but just looking at the bigger picture.

When i read this, i first thought its got to be a joke, theres no way on earth that i would do this, esp, in a pub, theres other means of doing this, doing talks to rural group, organising a therapy night, the list is endless.

I have heard of this before, in fact I think theres a company in London that do just that! i think I saw it in a magazine, I remember thinking at the time....not a good idea with alcohol!
I do think its a bit different to an indulgence evening though, as in that case most of the audience have come along because they are interested to know more about what we do, as appose to being accosted in the pub whilst half-cut...[sm=food-smiley-004.gif]

the funny thing is the therapist said to the guy "it's more for relaxing than to work on specifics"

i'm sorry but after 3 pints or so i'd say i'd be way more than relaxed!!

i was really grrrr about it and considered asking her why she is going round pubs and doesn't this belittle the profession etc but i though i'd leave my high horse at the door.

Saw this is Australia (Sydney) last year. The punters enjoyed it (a bit too much at times!), the girl made a packet, however she did have a bouncer with her who did have to step in once or twice! Not good.

God we have to be SOOOO careful where and how we advertise in this profession anyway,because it is so easy for people to assume they will get 'extras'

YOU have to wonder why anyone serious about doing it as a career would want to risk it let alone allow people to think she is willing to 'treat' in such conditions.

I did actually have one of these in Kew Gardens last week while watching Jools Holland ( a friend bought it for me as a treat!) and it was pretty good I have to say. I had a chat to guy doing it and he has trained in Indian Head Massage and Onsite massage and knew waht he was doing . there was certainly no hint of seediness or "extras"

he said he never did anyone who was "really drunk" and he did do a quick check with me for contraindications before we started . I did also overhear him saying to another customer that they could benefit from a full treatment so to go to their local therapist.

It is a question of how to broaden the market for massage - this might be the only way some people get the idea that there are alternatives to going out and getting drunk - if mohammed won't come to the mountain..........

i know the world ain't perfect and i wasn't naming names because i didn't speak to the girl in question to get her side of things

it was just that the majority of people (and a large majority) who go to pubs do so to drink alcohol, and the pub culture in the uk does seem to be cram in the drink!

i thought it was a strange environment to do tasters and promote business, it is still quite different to doing this at an outdoor concert or festival

i wasn't suggesting that there was anything seedy but it is interesting to hear that Triathlon789 has seen someone with bouncer in tow

Depends where you are.. massage in pubs, hmm, not ideal. I do a lot of salsa dancing and you'll find very few people actually drinking alcohol there, but you do get a lot of people who have pulled muscles, strains and bruises from knocks and bumps (mainly caused by me hehe) and I think in the salsa culture it would be ok, cause it's not like a lads night out, people are there to unwind, socialise and dance.. Quite a few I know have knee, elbow and shoulder problems so it'd be quite cool to offer it. I'm planning to offer treatments at the next festival actually.. I feel this would be appropriate for tasters as long as I did it early evening and only on those who haven't already been drinking. Could do something to loosen muscles and increase general energy levels.

Not sure about donation basis though, it looks a bit ad hoc like that.. if it was me I'd rather have the pub employ me to do things.. and take it from there..

Most massage training schools teach that alcohol consumption before massage is a contraindication....

We were approached by the NHS recently to see if we could provide some therapists to go round pubs with a team from their health promotions dept, to offer massage, as part of a wellbeing drive, but we refused, as we felt that this was not a good way to promote massage.

If I ever had a client who was under the influence of alcohol I would not give a treatment....if anything happened to them post treatment, you could be liable, due to it being a contraindicated treatment.....you wouldnt have a leg to stand on (no pun intended!)
