I have a question. How many hands on massage is one expected to give for a potential employer? I had a potential employer call me up and said to come in and give a massage to one of her worker as he will do the screening. then she calls me up and ask me to come in to massage her saying that she heard great things about me and want to talk about time and shift. What the hell happen to the verbal interview? They didn't even get to know me. they want me to demo my skills. what the hell is wrong with these people? they don't know how to do a proper hiring process. they have to let me know the massage position and what they are looking for. it seems they just want free massage. it don't say much about the business if they don't take the interview process seriously. It seems most places are like this. come in do demo massage and we will contact you if we interested. they don't give a darn about your character. one's character is the most important aspects of a good therapist. i'm hesitant to work there even if the position was for a substitute position for few months. i'll think about it.

One. Period.

Anything more than that is just abusing the situation.

At our clinic, potential MTs have a verbal interview 1st with the owner and then if she is still interested, they give a 20min or so demo massage to one of the therapists working there (usually me but if I'm not available then someone else) so we can get an idea of what their touch is like.

In the half dozen or so interviews I have done, I have done 3 massages as part of the hiring process, but they were always done after the verbal interview. If they weren't interested in me, they didn't ask for a massage. I have no issues giving a massage to demonstrate my skills, after the person interviewing me, has decided they like my resume, and what I had to say.

I would take exception to having to massage everyone and their dog in the clinic before getting the job. Who ever is most qualified to judge my massage gets the massage. Where I am now, I interviewed with the chiro I rent space from, but was taking over from a therapist going on maternity leave. I massaged the therapist, as she knew what I needed to know better than the chiro did. When the chiro wanted a massage, she booked in with me, and paid me.

I'd be wary, but that's just me.

I gave 2 massages when I interviewed for a 4 star spa. They were not full hour massage's and it was after the verbal interview.

that's what I thought. suppose to do verbal interview to get to know the person first. it's common sense. anymore than one massage is just abuse in my opinion unless your competing with many applicants in a big company as a way for them to do process of elimination.

Lately most places don't care for verbal interview first before demo. and demos are usually full hr massages. I get tired of these abuse. It shows me they don't know how to run a business or know how to hire properly.

One place I interviewed for many years ago did this:

She wanted me to know how she worked, that was important to her. I had to pay her $25.00 or something and she gave me a massage. Trust me, it was worth it. But then I gave her a massage and she paid me. I got the job!

You sure met with a smart one there. Not many out there like that, or at least I never met them when I was giving away the free ones.

She showed you what she expected, you did your best to do that and everyone's happy. I bet she was fair to work for as well.

You just described San Francisco: competing with many applicants.

I know of a spa in Pac Heights that has a series of interviews, including three demo massages. They certainly get away with it. I said "no thanks"... they pay less than what I make in the Castro.

Yes, I think I almost interviewed at that place in Pacific Heights... but when I discovered that I had to do 3 hours of unpaid massage for an interview, i decided not to....

That was my thought....and that it is incredibly illegal! Imagine the insurance nightmare if someone - client or MT - claimed to get hurt!?!

This chiropractor may have beat the Rub Club Dr. at his own game! :

My position at an Insurance company was got that way. I went in for a day and massaged a bunch of associates that get regular massage. However, they did pay me for my time. Apparently the head HR lady doesn't get massage so she had to go off the opinion of some associates (emnployee's).
