JOHNSTOWN — Three proposals were received this week to lease the Fulton County Airport’s vacant restaurant building, but its next incarnation may not be a regular restaurant.
“It doesn’t look like it,” county Senior Planner Sean Geraghty said Thursday.
It’s possible the building –site of many restaurants over the years — could become the site of a comedy club or a massage parlor.
Fulton County in March put the word it was seeking requests for proposals from persons or firms interested in leasing the county-owned building at the airport on Route 67. Officials said it could be used to operate as a restaurant or “another acceptable airport-related use,” a county news release said. Proposals were due into the county by last Wednesday.
Geraghty said three lease proposals were received. He declined to review proposed lease arrangements. He noted the proposals will be discussed in further detail at the county Board of Supervisors’ Buildings and Grounds/Highway Committee meeting at 1 p.m. Monday at the County Office Building.
The Experimental Aircraft Association submitted one of the proposals, Geraghty said. The proposed use was listed as “meeting space.”
According to the website for Adirondack Chapter 602 of the Experimental Aircraft Association, the group has existed for over 30 years. It draws members from Fulton, Montgomery, Saratoga, Schenectady, Schoharie and Albany counties. The site states, “Summer meetings find us at the main hanger at Fulton County Airport, and winter meetings are at C&R Restaurant on Route 29, Galway.”
Geraghty said a second building lease proposal came from Tom Nicci, who he said is associated with The Comedy Works, a comedy club on Broadway in Saratoga Springs. The proposed use was ” meeting and function space.”
The third proposal was from Barbara Moyer, a therapist for Mohawk Valley Healing on South Comrie Avenue in Johnstown, Geraghty said. The proposed use was listed as “massage therapy and wellness center.”
Her website states she is a 2011 graduate from The Center for Natural Wellness School of Massage in Albany. The site says Moyer has a background in Swedish-style massage and sport massage, and her influence is in Shiatsu, deep/therapeutic work and cupping massage.
The airport building off Route 67 was shuttered during the winter. The building has been the site of many restaurants and cafes over a few decades. But the county in 2016 had trouble finding a tenant. The last tenant was Grandma Millie’s Bakery.
The unfurnished building – constructed in 1993 — contains about 1,200 square feet of floor space and includes handicapped-accessible restrooms, dining area, a kitchen and a utility room. The building has separate electrical and gas services. Heat is provided by gas-fired, through-wall heaters and the building is insulated. Public water is provided through a county water district.
