MOUNT PLEASANT — After being closed for several weeks due to a sexual assault charge, massage parlor Body Oasis might be back in business soon.
The village’s Finance/Legal/License committee on Wednesday approved Shuling Zhao’s business license after her husband, Huaying Sun, was charged with third-degree sexual assault on July 12.
The only condition of the license is Zhao’s husband Sun is not allowed on the premises, located in a multi-tenant building at 5802 Washington Ave.
Zhao was present at the meeting with a lawyer who spoke for her.
Village Clerk Stephanie Kohlhagen said if Zhao paid for the license, she could use the receipt as a temporary license until the actual license arrives. She asked the establishment to list all of its state-licensed massage therapists who work at the business so the village can keep track.
“We are going to be asking all of our massage businesses throughout the entire village to provide us with a list of state-licensed massage therapists that are working in their establishment,” Kohlhagen said.
Zhao’s lawyer said the business will do that.
Body Oasis closed when the village discovered the sexual assault charge against Sun and withdrew the business license.
In January 2011, officers reportedly spoke with Sun after a woman told police she went to a massage parlor at Regency Mall, 5538 Durand Ave., and was sexually assaulted by Sun.
According to a criminal complaint, Sun asked the woman to undress, fondled her breasts and touched her genitalia.
The business relocated to Washington Avenue several years after the incident. It’s unclear why the charge came so long after the incident.
On Tuesday, Sun pleaded not guilty to third-degree sexual assault. A pre-trial conference hearing is scheduled for Sept. 1. Sun was released July 12 on a $10,000 signature bond.
