A massage therapist who was charged Wednesday with third-degree sexual assault told police that he touched a client improperly during a massage on Monday after he “misread” her demeanor, according to a criminal complaint.
Christopher J. Ehrett, 33, of Madison, said he thought the woman was flirtatious and wanted more than a massage, according to the complaint, filed in Dane County Circuit Court.
Ehrett was released from jail on a signature bond after a court appearance Wednesday and ordered to have no contact with the woman and not to be at any business where massages are done.
According to the complaint:
The woman told Fitchburg police that during a massage at Massage Envy, 6231 McKee Road, Ehrett touched her genitals. She said it happened as Ehrett was working on her leg near the end of an hourlong massage.
The woman told police that she froze and didn’t know what to do, then moved her leg, which caused Ehrett to move his hand. She said he then continued the massage at her shoulders and pectoral area, but slid his hand down across one of her breasts. He removed it when she moved her shoulder, she said.

After the massage, Ehrett asked the woman, “Did you like the teaser?” She said she didn’t, and he apologized, she said.
The woman later called a friend, who strongly encouraged her to call police.
The woman said this was her third visit to Massage Envy since September. On her second visit, in October, she thought Ehrett might have gone too close to her genital area, but she thought it might have been accidental. State licensing records indicate that Ehrett has had a massage therapy license since 2011.
