A man who allegedly portrayed himself as needing practice with clients to obtain his massage therapist license is suspected of sexual assault in Davis and Aurora, Colorado, Davis police say.
Robert Richard Beattie Smith, 27, was identified last summer by Davis police after they received a report from a woman in July 2014 that she had been sexually assaulted by a man. The victim told police investigators the suspect said he needed to fulfill a certain number of hours providing massage therapy to obtain his license and to do that, he offered a free massage plus would conpensate the woman for her time. He identified himself as Richard.
The session began as a massage but then Richard sexually assaulted the woman, she reported. She confronted him but he grabbed his belongings and fled in a vehicle. The victim wrote down a partial license plate number which police tracked to Smith. However, they were unable to locate him. A warrant was issued for his arrest.

Monday, Jan. 12, Davis police were contacted by Aurora police who had Smith in custody in connection to a similar crime in their area.
Aurora detectives say Smith is suspected of sexually assaulted a 15-year-old girl after making contact with her when she posted she was looking for a job on a social media website. The victim reported Smith said he would compensate her if she allowed him to give her a massage so he get hours toward his massage therapy license. What began as a massage on the teen turned into a sexual assault, the police report said.
Investigators think Smith may have other victims in the Sacramento and Aurora areas. Anyone who believes they have been victimized by Smith was urged to contact their local law enforcement agency to report the crime.
